Treatment of hyperactive children with essential oils & Aromatherapy
By: Dr. Rosie Abelson and Tsippi Schloss

In recent years, problems of attention and concentration (ADD), often accompanied by hyperactive behaviour (ADHD) has become quite common amongst children. These disturbances cause difficulties for the children, their parents and their teachers. These children find it hard to accept instruction, easily lose concentration because of external stimulation, find it difficult to concentrate on studies and frequently lose and forget things.

There is no clear indication of the cause of this deficiency, possible causes could be:
Endocrynal - disturbance in thyroid and adrenal glands
Nervous - Neurochemical imbalance
Immunological - low iron levels in blood and low haemoglobin
Nutritional - sugar consumption causing release of epeniphrine which could stimulate a hyperactive reaction, a shortage of vital fatty acids causing damage to the production of cell membranes.
Food sensitivity - Feingold’s research shows the connection between behavioural disturbances and consumption of foods containing sugar, food colouring, dairy products and preseratives.
Environment - electromagnetic radiation from high power lines, electrical equipment.
Family - the family’s role.

Treatment of children with behavioural disturbances varies widely and needs to be adapted specifically to each child and family. The use of essential oils is extremely helpful and can be integrated with all types of treatment.
Essential oils recommended for use are those with a calmative effect:
Citrus Bergamia
Lavendula angustifolia
Melissa officinalis
Boswellia corteri
Citrus aurantium
Marjorana hortensis

Using these oils in a burner is recommended. Put hot water in the burner and add a few drops of oil, the steam will cause the oils to spread in the room.

Also recommended – put a few drops of essential oil of Bergamot on the child’s lapels before he goes to school.
In addition, it is also worth massaging the child, especially his neck, hands and feet.
Use 50 ml. sweet almond oil and add 2 drops each of essential oils of Bergamot, Bitter Orange, Lavender and Sweet Marjoram.
The massage calms and balances the hyperative action. Do not massage before going out into sunlight because of the photosensitive action of some of the oils.

For children suffering from behavioural disturbances give 10 drops of tincture of orange flower plus one drop each of essential oils of Bergamot and Sweet Marjoram in a cup of water 2 – 3 times daily 20 minutes before meals.

To boost the child’s self confidence: add to 30 ml. Of sweet almond oil  12 drops essential oil of Cedar (Cedrus atlantica) and 12 drops of essential oil of Sandalwood (Santalum album). Massage the child’s back and neck, especially along the sides of his spine from the tail bone up to his neck.
The use of essential oils is suitable both to children and parents. They improve the quality of life and produce a pleasing aroma.
